Grazing Calculator3.1.0 - App Store

A quick and simple way to calculate a number of common grazing related equations used by dairy and beef farmers. This app is the brainchild of a dairy farmer, who wanted a fast and easy way for him and his workers to be able to do grazing related calculations, and was designed and developed in collaboration with his sister, with input from other farmers and farm advisors.

Designed to be used out on the farm and on the go, this app makes it quick, easy and simple for anyone working on a dairy or beef farm - regardless of their level of experience and knowledge - to get the numbers they need, when they need them.

About the calculators (visit our website for more detailed descriptions):
● Days in Paddock - Work out the approximate number of days to leave a specific number of cows in a paddock using either:
◦ kgDM/cow or lbDM/cow allocation, paddock size, cover and residual.
◦ m2/cow/day or yd2/cow/day allocation and paddock size
- These results can then be used to calculate approximately where to put the break fence in a paddock.

● DM/Cow/Day - Work out approximately how many kgDM/cow/day or lbDM/cow/day you will get from a paddock based on paddock size, cover, residual, number of cows and number of days.
- This result can then be used to calculate approximately where to put the break fence in a paddock

● Crop Allocation - Work out the approximate area of crop to allocate and the approximate number of days you can leave the cows in a paddock based on yield, the number of cows, the kgDM/cow/day or lbDM/cow/day required and paddock area.
- This result can then be used to calculate approximately where to put the break fence in a paddock

● Pre-Grazing Cover - Work out the approximate target pre-grazing cover or the paddock trigger level based on stocking rate, intake, round length or rotation and the optimum residual.

● Average Pasture Cover - Work out the approximate average pasture cover for your farm based the pre-grazing cover and optimum residual. Enter the values directly or use the result from the Pre-Grazing Cover calculator.

Other Features:
● Choose to do the calculations in Metric or US system of measurement. On first installing the app will be promoted to choose from using either the Metric or US system of measurement. You can change the selected units at any time via the Settings.
● Share the result of the calculation using any of the available options off your device.
● Settings options for the shared content:
- send answer only, or send the answer and variables
- include or don't include units
- always edit before sending, never edit or choose each time whether edit or not
● Add a note after completing the calculation e.g. paddock or mob name. This note will be included in the shared content.

Thanks to everyone who has given feedback and suggestions! It has been very useful in helping us improve the app. We are always looking for ways to make the app better, so please contact us if you have any feedback or suggestions.

Version History Added dark mode. 3.1.0 06/30/2020 Updated design and new colour scheme.
iPad version that works in portrait and landscape.
You can now share using any of available options on your device.
Share, Home and Settings buttons moved to a bottom bar.
Add note function updated to allow longer and more complex notes. 3.0.0 01/09/2019 Bug fixes 2.0.1 02/23/2015 ● Now with US units! On first installing the app or update you will be promoted to choose from using either the Metric or US system of measurement. You can change the selected units at any time via the Settings.
● You can now choose to send the result a calculation in an email, as an SMS or copy it to the clipboard.
● A shortened name and a shiny new icon! 2.0.0 12/21/2014 ● Added a new calculation - Calculate approximately where to put the break fence in the paddock based on primary fence length and break size in meters squared. The break size is automatically calculated in the Days in Paddock Meters Squared and kg Dry Matter Allocation calculators, and the kgDM/Cow/Day calculator, and then exported to the Break Fence calculator.
● The Days in Paddock Meters Squared Allocation now calculates meters squared per day.
● The Days in Paddock kg Dry Matter Allocation and the kgDM/Cow/Day calculators now calculate meters squared per day and meters squared per cow per day.
● The Crop Allocation calculator now calculates square meters to allocate and also number of days you can leave the cows in a paddock
● Added a button to each calculator the opens the settings menu
● Added a button to each calculator that returns directly to the home/main menu page
● Small UI changes and bug fixes 1.5.0 09/09/2014 New in this version
● Added the option to write a note after completing the calculation e.g. paddock or mob name. This note will be included in the SMS.
● Reformatted the SMS content to make the message more readable
● Added an option to edit the message before sending
● Added settings for message content
- send the answer only, or the answer and variables
- include or don't include units in message
- always edit message before sending, never edit or choose each time whether edit or not 1.4.0 07/17/2014 Bug Fixes 1.3.4 03/29/2014 Added two new calculators:
- Work the approximate number of days you can leave cows in a particular paddock based on the result from the crop allocation calculator and paddock area.
- Work out approximately where to put the break fence in a paddock based on the result from the crop allocation calculator and the primary fence length. 1.3.3 02/18/2014 ● Added description for each individual calculator, including the equation used.
● Renamed Calculate Pasture Allocation to Calculate Pre-Grazing Cover.
● Added new calculator: Calculate Optimal Average Pasture Cover (APC).
● Removed Calculate Total Silage DM. Variations in stack/pit shapes and human errors in measurement were causing the result to be out (high and low) by an unacceptably large amount. We are working on a new calculator with different inputs and visual aids. 1.2.3 11/10/2013 ◉New calculator added - Calculate Pasture Allocation
◉Added toolbar with DONE button to silage density default value picker
◉UI redesigned for iOS 7 1.1.0 10/11/2013 1.0 09/06/2013
